Lady Jackets chalk up 2 easy victories
Taking on a pair of opponents with a combined 10 wins in back-to-back days didn’t figure to offer the Kingfisher girls basketball team much resistance.
And it didn’t. The Lady Jackets extended their win streak to seven games on Friday and then eight on Saturday by dominating Casady and Chickasha, respectively.
The Lady Cyclones fell by a score of 71-36 and then Chickasha dropped a 62-31 decision.
Neither game was as close as even the lopsided final scores would suggest.
On Friday, KHS took a 63-15 lead into the fourth before Casady closed with a 19-8 run.
Prior to that, the visitors struggled to crack Kingfisher’s defense.
Casady had two field goals and six points at halftime.
For the game, KHS forced 26 turnovers and scored 29 points off of them. The Lady Jackets had 19 steals as a team, five by Peyton Walker and another four by Abbie Myers.
Walker had five points and Raegan Snider six in the first quarter as Kingfisher built a 20-3 lead.
It grew to a 30-point advantage by halftime.
Then, to put an exclamation on it, Kingfisher made five treys and scored 27 third-quarter points.
Addy Matthews drained two of them.
Myers led the balanced attack with 13 points. She added a team-high eight rebounds.
Matthews scored 12 points and had four assists.
Walker finished with 11 points while Talor Mecklenburg, Snider and Jancee Matthews each scored eight points.
The lead over Chickasha after three quarters was 5414. The Lady Chicks’ best scoring quarter was seven points before they closed the game with 17 in the fourth.
The Lady Jackets forced 27 turnovers in this contest and had 13 steals.
Chickasha was held to 27.6 percent shooting.
That helped Kingfisher get out to a 19-3 lead in the first, one it extended to 3710 by halftime.
Again, Kingfisher made a statement coming out of halftime with another burst of 17-3.
And - again - the scoring was balanced.
Matthews led the team with 13 points.
Mecklenburg, who made three treys, scored 11.
Walker also made three 3-pointers for her nine points and added four assists and four steals.
Mattie Slezickey contributed eight points and three steals, Snider scored seven points and Abbie Myers led the team with eight rebounds to go with her six points.
The Saturday game was originally to be played Jan. 2, but KHS had to postpone it due to a large number of players being sick.
The wins moved the Lady Jackets to 14-4.
