Kingfisher cruises into Wheat Capital semis
The Kingfisher boys basketball team has won multiple state championships, its fair share of invitational tournaments, had major win streaks and sat atop the rankings for the better part of the past fourplus years.
But it hadn’t scored 100 points in a game (despite many easy opportunities).
Until Thursday.
Playing an overmatched Blackwell squad in the first round of the Wheat Capital Tournament in Chisholm, top-seeded Kingfisher couldn’t apply the brakes enough in a 109-26 victory
The victory pushed KHS into Friday’s semifinal against Tecumseh (after press time).
The domination started early as Kingfisher scored the game’s first 17 points and led 36-10 after a quarter.
The defense picked up in the second as Blackwell made an early 3-pointer, but nothing the rest of the half as the lead swelled to 62-13.
Kingfisher’s starters, who hadn’t played since mid-December, didn’t see the court again, but that didn’t stop the shots from falling.
The Jackets made nine 3-pointers in the second half alone.
Four of those were from Mason Snider, who eventually led all scorers with 22 points. He made five treys overall.
Matthew Stone added 21 points. All were in the firsthalf and 15 came in the first quarter.
Bijan Cortes and Maverick “Slam Dunk” Ridenour scored 13 apiece.
The Jackets (7-1) shot 68 percent for the game, including 57 percent (16 of 28) from 3-point range.
KHS girls advance with easy win
The benches cleared Thursday for the Kingfisher girls in their Wheat Capital opener.
But in a good way.
Everyone played in the top-seeded Lady Jackets’ 72-17 quarterfinal win against the OKC Knights.
KHS started hot with five 3-pointers and 30 points in the first quarter and the Knights had no chance to keep up.
Already up 42-8, Kingfisher held its opponent scoreless in the third quarter.
Eleven different Lady Jackets scored, ledby Emily Myers’ 13 points.
Allison Green, Mya Dewberry and Peyton Walker scored 10 points apiece as the team improved to 8-0.
