KHS takes on ‘bigs’ at Titan Classic

As if running a 5K for the first and only time this season wasn’t difficult enough, the Kingfisher High School girls cross country team did it exclusively against 5A and 6A schools. The result?
Not bad at all. KHS took seventh place out of 25 full teams last Friday in the 2022 Titan High School Cross Country Invitational at Carl Albert.
The Lady Jackets were the only non-5A or 6A school with a full team in the field. “Considering we don’t really train for a 5K, I was extremely pleased with how the girls ran,” coach Kerri Lafferty said.
“The course was muddy and slick, but they handled the conditions well.”
A bulk of high school girls races are 3,200 meters.
“The girls should go into their next 3,200 meter race feeling pretty confident,” Lafferty said.
The varsity girls race featured 179 runners.
Freshman Scout Snodgrass was 20th among them with her time of 21:49.64.
Natalie Duggan of Edmond Santa Fe was the winner in 18:53.29.
She was about 17 seconds faster than the runner- up, Morgan Kirkland of Edmond North.
Piedmont, which won the team title, had runners finish third, fourth and fifth.
KHS saw Chesni Newkirk cross the finish line in 35th, but 33rd among scoring runners.
Shefinishedin22:39.57. Harper Evans (47th, 43rd), Terry Ann McCully (61st, 57th) and Emmy Lunsford (64th, 60th) also scored points for KHS.
The Lady Jackets totaled 213 points, one behind sixth-place Stillwater.
Piedmont had only 67 points, beating Edmond North by seven and Edmond Memorial by 19.
Yukon was fourth with 99 and Guthrie fifth at 192.
Avery Davis brought home a medal in the JV girls race, which was also a 5K.
Davis was 16th out of 176 competitors and finished in 25:15.89.
Zaylynn Lopez ran 42nd and Natalie Garrett 50th for KHS.
The KHS boys ran in the JV boys race, which had 23 boys teams.
Kingfisher was led by Coleman Gilles to take 11th place.
The Jackets tallied 334 points.
Gilles ran 32nd (28th) out of 313 runners.
He finished in 20:18.87. Wyatt Long (61st, 48th), Alezandro Cuellar (80th, 63rd), Rhett Schlegel (102nd, 81st) and Conner Askey (151st, 114th) saw their points also score for KHS.
