KHS surges late against Clinton, swept at Woodward in pivotal district series
Addison Willson’s pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth inning broke open a scoreless game and spurred Kingfisher to a 5-0 victory over Clinton on Tuesday.
Red Tornado pitcher Brinley Taylor kept the KHS bats off balance much of the night and held Kingfi sher scoreless through five innings.
Adlee Friesen started the sixth with her second hit in as many at-bats.
She stole second and then scored as Willson pushed her base hit up the middle.
That opened the gates for Kingfisher.
Lily Voth delivered a sacrifice fly to score Liliana Garramone, who reached base by walking.
Addison Johnson sent a double to the fence to score Willson, then Johnson scored on a double by Jancee Matthews.
Matthews eventually stole home to make it 5-0.
Voth made it stick as she scattered five hits over seven innings for the shutout victory.
The freshman righthander struck out six and only walked one batter.
Clinton twice got runners to third base, but each time Voth got out of the inning by inducing groundouts.
Taylor, a freshman, allowed seven hits and struck out four.
Friesen and Matthews had two hits apiece.
Kingfisher moved to 18-5 overall and 5-4 in District 4A-1 with the win.
That tied KHS with Woodward for fourth place in the district.
However, Woodward broke that tie convincingly Thursday.
The Lady Boomers handed KHS losses of 8-4 and 14-1 in a double-header at Woodward.
In the opener, Woodward used a four-run third to take a 5-0 lead.
Jancee Matthews got KHS on the board. After singling, the junior advanced to second on a wild pitch, then stole third and home.
But Woodward grabbed more distance with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lady Jackets got an RBI double from Lily Voth in the fifth, but couldn’t sustain a comeback.
The nightcap was all Woodward starting with the third inning.
The Boomers plated six runs, then five more in the fourth and three in the fifth.
They got 14 total hits in the five-inning run rule.
KHS got only four hits. Its lone run came with two outs in the fifth when Kinlee East homered to center.
The defeats put KHS at 18-7 overall and 5-6 in the district.
Kingfisher is in fifth place behind Weatherford (9-1), Elk City (8-2), Bethany (7-4) and Woodward (7-4).
The Lady Jackets were swept by Bethany as well, but split with Weatherford and Elk City in those series.
KHS hosts Mount St. Mary Monday at 5 p.m. in its final district game.
