KHS stays unbeaten in baseball district
The Kingfisher baseball team kept its perfect district record intact last week with a home-and-home sweep over Woodward.
The Jackets hit the road Monday and came back home with a 10-6 victory.
At Homier Field Tuesday, it was a bit more dramatic in a 6-5 eight-inning win.
The triumphs moved KHS to 6-0 in District 4A-4 games.
The three sweeps - Woodward, Western Heights and Anadarko - came against teams with a combined 0-24 district record.
Kingfisher’s remaining district slate against Elk City, Weatherford and Clinton see those teams have a combined 18-0 district mark to date.
Eight different Jackets drove in a run in Monday’s victory while coach Stan Blundell had to go to his bullpen earlier than expected.
Starting pitcher Dallen Barton injured his hand while sliding into third base in the second inning.
Blundell turned to Bryce Cockayne, who delivered 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Cockayne surrendered six runs, but only two were earned. He struck out five batters.
Tanner Parker closed out the win by garnering the final five outs.
The Boomers scored in bunches as they plated three runs in both the third and sixth innings.
KHS’ production was more spread out as the Jackets scored at least once in all but one inning. The Jackets put home two runs in each the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Before being hurt, Barton was responsible for two of Kingfisher’s 15 hits, both doubles.
Bode Williams went 3 for 4, scored three times and drove in a run.
Parker, Eli Johnson, Daniel Guerrero and Coleman Gilles had two hits each.
Johnson drove in two runs while Guerrero scored twice.
It was Guerrero and Johnson who combined to deliver the heroics on Tuesday.
Guerrero’s double scored Johnson for the game-win-ning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Johnson had reached with a one-out single and moved to second on Isaiah Medellin’s hit before scoring from there.
It ended an up-and-down game that saw Kingfisher lose a pair of leads.
One was 3-0 as Parker and Medellin had RBI singles in the bottom of the second.
The Boomers tied it up in the fourth, but KHS went back up 4-3 on Medellin’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame.
Woodward tied it back up in the fifth and then took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning.
Johnson knotted the game right back up when his single brought home Damien Haynes, who led off the inning with a walk.
Johnson’s game-winning run also gave himself the win.
He pitched a scoreless eighth inning and struck out two batters.
Parker pitched a gem for the Jackets as he struck out nine Boomers over seven innings.
The right-hander gave up two earned runs and just five hits.
At the plate, Johnson was 4 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Medellin was 3 for 4 while Guerrero and Parker had two hits apiece.
The Jackets were 7-10 overall after the sweep.
Kingfisher hosted The Shed Classic over the weekend and will host Elk City Monday before traveling to the Elks’ home field Tuesday.
