Loss to Woodward means 5 wins in 6 days a must...while shorthanded

A long week got a little bit longer for Kingfisher.

The Lady Jackets were faced with the task of winning five games in six days if they were going to make their first trip to the state tournament since 2009.

The first step came Monday when KHS defeated John Marshall 48-26 in a regional consolation semifinal at the APB.

That put Kingfisher into Tuesday’s consolation championship (after press time) against Mannford, which beat Harrah 47-31 on Monday night.

The Lady Jackets have to win Tuesday to advance to the area tournament, which starts Thursday. There, they’ll need to win three straight days to advance to state.

Woodward put Kingfisher in that position on Saturday by stunning the sixth-ranked Lady Jackets 39-38 in a winner’s bracket semifinal.

The Lady Boomers held Kingfisher to one fourth-quarter field goal and just three the entire second half.

Still, KHS led for all but a few seconds of the game.

Woodward’s Masey Porter hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter and give the visitors a 29-28 lead.

Kingfisher’s Allison Green answered right back seconds later with three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc.

Kingfisher maintained a lead until 20 seconds were left.

Porter made two free throws to give her team a one-point lead.

Kingfisher worked the clock down to just under 10 seconds before calling a timeout.

The Lady Jackets got it inside to Ray Garner, but her shot was off the mark. Time ran out as the teams scrambled for the ball.

That defeat put Kingfisher within one loss of elimination, but that was only part of the bad news.

Emily Myers went down with a knee injury in the first half and didn’t return.

It was revealed on Monday morning the junior had torn her ACL and would miss the remainder of the playoffs.

Without her, the Lady

Jackets staved off elimination against John Marshall.

All but two of the Lady Bears’ field goals came from Margiznee Turner before she fouled out in the fourth quarter.

With or without Turner on the floor, KHS was in command much of the game.

Green hit two early treys as part of a 10-0 run by Kingfisher to start the game.

Kingfisher then held John Marshall scoreless for 5:30 to start the second.

The Lady Jackets scored only 18 points combined in the second and third quarters, but John Marshall never scored more than seven in any frame.

Green led the team with 13 points. She had 10 in the loss to Woodward.

Garner led the team with 12 against Woodward and scored 10 against the Lady Bears.

Kina Frost, who started in Myers’ place, scored seven points, all in the second half.

Peyton Walker also scored seven as Kingfisher moved to 20-5.
