KHS girls cruise into semis
Top seed dominates Cushing to open Wheat Capital
Kingfisher might not have been 100 percent, but that much wasn’t necessary.
The top-seeded Lady Jackets cruised into the Wheat Capital Tournament semifinals with Thursday’s 57-21 victory against winless Cushing.
The team’s scheduled game last Tuesday had to be postponed as more than half the Lady Jackets were out due to varying sicknesses.
There were little signs of that when Kingfisher scored the game’s first 11 points and held the Lady Tigers without a field goal until 1:50 was left in the opening quarter.
A 20-7 lead after a quarter was 30-13 at halftime.
Kingfisher then made five 3-pointers in the third quarter to push its advantage to 29 points.
Four of those treys left the fingertips of Addy Matthews, who made seven overall and led all scorers with 24 points.
Freshman Mattie Slezickey added two more 3-pointers as part of her eight points.
Talor Mecklenburg also made two from long range and scored six for KHS, which has now won three straight games.
Kingfisher played Perry in Friday’s semifi nal (after press time). Perry beat Woodward 47-46 on Thursday.
