KHS dominates season openers

It took Kingfisher a couple of empty trips down the floor before it scored its first points of the basketball season.

But when the Lady Jackets did find the bottom of the net, the rout was on in what turned into a 6716 victory at Chisholm’s Outhier Fieldhouse.

KHS missed a couple of “easy” shots to begin the game before sophomore Raegan Snider knocked down a baseline 3-pointer at the 6:30 mark.

By the midway point of the quarter - just two-anda- half minutes later - the lead was 19-0.

Then 27-0 after a quarter.

Then 34-0 at 6:50 of the second quarter when Emily Myers buried a 3-pointer.

That trey gave every Lady Jacket starter a made 3-pointer.

By halftime, KHS had knocked down nine treys. The Lady Jackets ended the game 13 of 29 (44.8 percent).

Seven different KHS players made at least one.

Three came off the fingertips of senior Mya Dewberry, who was getting her first career start.

She followed Snider’s trey with two of her own to force a quick Chisholm timeout.

Dewberry added five more points in the second quarter as the KHS lead swelled to 40-6.

She ended the night with 12 points, three steals and five more deflections on defense.

Peyton Walker and Addy Matthews also had two 3-pointers apiece in the first quarter.

A junior, Walker also scored 12, added five assists and five steals.

Matthews, also a junior, scored 11 to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Ten different Lady Jackets scored and six scored six or more points.

The defense held Chisholm to 21 percent shooting (5 of 24) and forced 31 turnovers.

KHS scored 43 points off those turnovers.

Kadyn Daugherty added seven points for Kingfi sher while Emily Myers and Abbie Myers scored six apiece.

Defending champ Jackets win all over stat sheet

Jax Sternberger and Maddox Mecklenburg combined for just four points to open their basketball season.

Yet both of them played major roles in Kingfisher’s 64-30 dismantling of Chisholm at Outhier Fieldhouse last Friday night.

The defending Class 4A state champions beat the Longhorns in just about every facet of the game and Sternberger and Mecklenburg played big parts in categories other than points.

Sternberger had the four points, but controlled the paint with a game-high nine rebounds as the Jackets won that battle 37-18.

Mecklenburg attempted only one shot all night.

What he did do was lead the team with six assists and four steals while grabbing seven boards of his own.

They were part of Kingfisher’s rotation that jumped on Chisholm early with a 24-5 run and then pushed it to 38-7 by halftime.

Chisholm’s offense had no answers for Kingfisher’s smothering man-toman and periodic trapping.

The Longhorns shot 30 percent (12 of 40) for the game and turned it over 21 times.

Eighteen of Chisholm’s points came in the fourth quarter, long after the game was decided.

The Longhorns also had no answer for the likes of Caden Kitchens and Xavier Ridenour.

Kitchens blitzed the Longhorns for 17 first-half points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

He finished with a game-high 25 to go with seven rebounds.

Ridenour slashed his way to most of his 15 points and was a big part of the Jackets’ 32 points in the paint.

Drake Friesen added another seven points for KHS.

Nine different Jackets scored in the game.
