KHS claims win in final district game
Cashion spoils season finale with 8-3 victory in seniors’ final game
Kingfisher’s “Senior Night” wasn’t all roses as the Lady Jackets took an 8-3 loss to Cashion on Tuesday in the season finale.
However, KHS did capture an exciting victory the night before in its last district game.
Bella Gomez was able to reach on a two-out error in the top of the ninth inning to allow Merrin Evans to score from third base.
Evans then notched the final three outs in the bottom half of the inning as the Lady Jackets beat Bridge Creek 9-8.
The extra-frame win gave Kingfisher a 4-10 record in District 4A-4 games.
Bridge Creek had beaten KHS 12-8 in Kingfisher on Aug. 29.
This time around, it was Kingfisher playing the role of road spoiler.
The Lady Jackets posted two first-inning runs, one on an error and another thanks to Evans’ double.
Bridge Creek scored one in the bottom of the frame and three more in the second inning to build a 4-2 lead.
KHS tied it in the third as Evans struck again.
Her double brought home Natalie Dick and Taylor Mills.
After the Lady Bobcats took another slim lead, Addison Willson tied it up in the top of the fifth with a triple to score Mya Dewberry.
The seesaw battle continued as Bridge Creek went up 7-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
It was Kingfisher’s turn in the top of the sixth as Gracie Rowan’s double scored Siera Stitt and Gomez.
Neither team could score in the seventh, sending it to extra innings.
Dewberry doubled in the eighth to score Rowan, but the Lady Jackets couldn’t hold the lead.
Evans walked to lead off the ninth and advanced to third before scoring on the Gomez grounder.
The play resulted in Bridge Creek’s seventh error of the game.
Evans notched the win and gave up just four earned runs over nine innings.
She was also 3 of 4 at the plate with a trio of RBIs.
Rowan, who doubled twice, Mills and Dewberry had two hits apiece.
Mills and Dewberry both scored twice.
Cashion and Kingfisher scheduled a “last-minute” home-and-home series the week before when Kingfisher’s original Senior Night opponent, Chisholm, had to back out of the game.
KHS traveled to Cashion on Sept. 22 and was sent home with a 13-1 loss.
The Lady Wildcats made it a clean sweep as they collected nine hits and took advantage of eight KHS errors.
Still, it was a slim 4-2 Cashion lead entering the seventh inning before the visitors erupted for four runs.
Ella Suntken reached on an error to bring in one run.
Later, Emilie Harrel doubled to score Suntken.
Kali Galliher had her own RBI double in the inning to make it 8-2.
Galliher and Story Pfenninger had two hits apiece to lead Cashion. Pfenninger also scored three times.
Kylynn Brunson gave up six hits and just one earned run for the win. She struck out six KHS batters.
Dewberry doubled in a run in the bottom of the inning, but Kingfisher couldn’t muster more runs.
Dewberry and Rowan had two hits apiece for KHS.
Natalie Dick led the team with three hits in her final game.
Kingfisher’s season ended with a 16-18 overall record.
Cashion ended its regular season with an 18-9 mark.
The Lady Wildcats were 9-5 in District 2A-2 and placed third.
They played this weekend in a 2A regional.
