KHS boys, girls dominate Elgin on the road
Kingfisher and Elgin shot the exact same percentage in their girls basketball game last Friday.
But that was about the only similar stat in the Lady Jackets’ 64-30 road win.
While both KHS and the Lady Owls were 33.3 percent from the field, the Lady Jackets shot it 30 more times.
That’s due in large part to Kingfisher’s 17 steals and 35 turnovers in all for Elgin. Those resulted in 38 points for Kingfisher.
The stealing wealth was widespread.
Emily Myers led the Lady Jackets with five of them, but Ally Stephenson and Allison Green added four each while Peyton Walker grabbed three.
After a slow start that saw Kingfisher lead 11-3 after a quarter, the Lady Jackets’ pressure picked up in the second quarter for a 21-2 run.
The 34 points in the paint for Kingfisher helped offset 4 of 30 (13.3 percent) shooting from 3-point range.
Kingfisher also had 21 offensive rebounds and 13 second-chance points. and Green had
Myers and Green had five boards each on the offensive end.
Green led the team with 12 points. She had six rebounds total and four assists.
Britt Taylor, whose only missed shot was a single free throw, scored 10 points.
Stephenson also scored 10.
Addy Matthews added nine points off the bench while Myers ended her night with seven points, five rebounds and six assists to go along with her steals. After Tuesday’s game at Chisholm (after press time), the Lady Jackets are set to play this weekend in the Compass Athletics Winter Classic in Woodward (see schedule on this page).
Jacket defense smothers Owls
It took Jared Reese about three minutes of game action before he’d seen enough.
The Kingfisher boys basketball coach took about that long before he grabbed five players off his bench to replace his starting five against Elgin.
The Jacket starters weren’t trailing their hosts, but definitely struggling to find some consistency.
“We weren’tplaying with discipline and didn’t value the basketball,” Reese said of his momentary disdain.
Although the move had no bearing on the outcome of the game - a 62-23 victory for the visiting Jackets - it was intended to send a message.
“We have to come out ready to play the right way every night,” Reese said. “We weren’t Friday.”
KHS led 6-0 when Reese made his switch, one that lasted just over a minute before he put his regulars back into the game.
Although the Jackets’ offense never truly got on track, the defense was in no danger of surrendering any lead.
Elgin had just two field goals and six points at halftime. The Owls were down 48-11 after three quarters.
In all, the Owls shot 23 percent. They were more accurate from outside the arc (6 of 25) than inside (2 of 10).
The woes were compounded by 23 turnovers.
The Jackets scored 30 points off those turnovers, but also had 11 turnovers of their own.
“We’ve got to do better,” Reese said. “You’re going to have some turnovers, but some of ours could have been prevented.”
The Jackets struggled from 3-point range (8 of 25), but were 61 percent inside the arc and outscored the Owls 34-0 in the paint.
Bijan Cortes led the way with 15 points. He added five rebounds and four steals.
Matthew Stone scored 13 points to go with nine rebounds.
Maverick Ridenour - 3 of 6 from long range - scored 11 points.
The Jackets (2-0) played at Chisholm on Tuesday (after press time), then won’t play again until next Tuesday at Chickasha.
