Junior high, JV football report
As seventh graders, this year’s crop of eighth grade football players were defeated by Chisholm.
Kingfisher returned the favor Monday night by knocking off the Longhorns 12-8 in the eighth grade junior high game at Chisholm.
With Chisholm threatening to take the lead in the closing moments, Diego Muñoz ended the game with a tackle for a loss to save the win for KMS in its season opener.
Kingfisher scored both of its touchdowns in the second quarter.
Kale Hart scored on a 1-yard run. The touchdown was set up by a 35-yard pass from Cade Covalt to Ayden Varnell.
That duo connected again later in the quarter, this time on a 25-yard scoring play.
That TD was set up by Jake Reagan’s interception.
Coach Doug Jech said Covalt was solid in both passing and running the ball while Hart showed promise in his first game at tailback.
Defensively, Jech said Tanner Parker was exceptional in calling the defense while Grant Browning displayed a lot of “really good open-field tackling.”
The seventh grade Jackets were shutout 14-0 by the Longhorns.
“There’s still some learning to do,” Jech said. “They got some good experience considering this was their first school game.”
Jech said Bert Haag and Mason Alig had solid games on defense.
The seventh grade returned to action at home Thursday and was knocked off 36-8 by Crescent’s seventh and eighth grade.
“Crescent is pretty talented and they had a lot of size that we struggled with,” Jech said.
Will Mercer scored Kingfisher’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard run. Ryker Long added the two-point run.
“Will had a good game on both sides of the ball,” Jech said.
Jech also commended Payton Burnham at QB and Robert Barnett at center.
JV beats Chisholm
Kingfisher’s JV got a win in its first action of the year Monday.
The Jackets handed a 27-6 loss to Chisholm in Kingfisher.
Jax Sternberger accounted for three touchdowns in the win.
But first, it was Mason Mecklenburg who put Kingfisher on the board with a 62-yard TD run.
Sternberger followed in the second quarter with a short QB sweep and then a two-point run.
In the second half, Stern-berger threw a 30-yard TD to Braden States and then had a short scoring throw to Jud Birdwell.
Defensively, Sternberger and Grayson Bromlow recovered fumbles.
