Hurdles cleared in record books
Stephenson sets KHS marks in both hurdle events at Chisholm meet
Most people had Good Friday last week.
Ally Stephenson had a great one.
Two more Kingfisher High School records will now have her name next to them after her standout performance at the Chisholm Track & Field Invitational.
Stephenson won three gold medals and a silver as she guided KHS to a runner-up finish.
Two of her wins - the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles - saw her break school marks, one of which had been in place for nearly four decades.
Stephenson won the 100 hurdles in 14.78, which eclipsed the mark of 15.07 Janet (Foster) Dougherty set 39 years ago in 1983.
Stephenson followed that up with a 44.73 in the 300 hurdles, which bested Hailey (Matthews) Castleberry’s 46.28 in 2014.
In Facebook posts on the Times & Free Press page, both former record holders were gracious.
“Hoped the day would never come,” Castleberry said. “What a stud. Congrats Ally Stephenson.”
Dougherty was also a longtime record holder in the 100 before it was eclipsed.
In a message written to Stephenson, she said, “Happy someone as talented as you beat it. Good luck in college next year.”
Stephenson also won the high jump, needing only to clear 5 feet to do so.
She came in second in the long jump as reigning Class 2A champ Kinidi Taylor of Crescent edged her for a second time this season.
Taylor jumped 18-0 3/4. Stephenson’s best jump was 17-10.
KHS scored 114 points as Chisholm squeaked by with the team title with 116.
The two-mile relay team of Taylor Mills, Jacee Mueggenborg, Chesni Newkirk and Katon Lunsford won the event in 10:43.41.
Liberty Starr also earned gold for KHS as the freshman won the 3,200 meter run.
She finished in 13:24.75.
Mueggenborg was third in the event and seven seconds behind Starr.
The mile relay team of Demi Roden, Kina Frost, Mills and Mueggenborg was runner-up.
Lunsford was also third in the 800 in 2:34.22.
Talor Mecklenburg finished just out of the medals, but still garnered valuable points with a fourth-place finish in the 400.
Starr was also fourth and Lunsford fifth in the mile run.
Dani Rios-Ramirez took fifth in the pole vault and set a PR in the process as she cleared 8-0.
The long jump was just part of Taylor’s big day for the Lady Tigers.
The junior also won the 100 and was part of Crescent’s 400 relay team that won gold.
Kinzie Bell claimed gold for Crescent as well as she won the discus with a throw of 125-8. That was 21 feet further than the runner-up.
Cashion was third behind Kingfisher in the team standings with 88 points.
The team was strong in the relays as it won the 800 and 1,600 while the 400 squad was the runner-up.
Lauren Lamb, Reese Williams, Bella Wood and Abby Hobgood ran all three.
Hobgood, only a freshman, also won the 200 open in 26.99.
Addison McCracken added to the point total with a silver medal in the 3,200, just behind Starr.
Cashion’s 3,200 relay was fourth overall.
