Hamil, Shellstrom crowned at homecoming
Watonga tops Jackets on the mat
Braxton Shellstrom had himself a night.
The Kingfisher High School wrestler was recognized on Tuesday during a senior night ceremony prior to the Jackets’ home dual with Watonga.
Immediately after, Shellstrom was announced as the homecoming captain and he crowned Shaina Hamil the queen in a coronation ceremony at the APB.
And, finally, Shellstrom capped off the night by pinning Benjamin Camargo at heavyweight in the final match of the dual.
Shellstrom needed just 39 seconds to put Camargo’s shoulders to the mat, though it still wasn’t enough to lift the Jackets to victory.
The visiting Eagles won eight straight weights before Shellstrom snapped the string and they went home with a 51-24 victory.
The night started out well enough for KHS.
After a round of forfeits through the first few weights, Kingfisher led 126.
They made it 18-6 when Brayden Kochenower won the first match of the dual.
The freshman pinned Edgar Garcia-Rosas in 1:25.
That’s when the Eagles began to take control.
They got pins at 144 and 150 and then forfeit wins at 157 and 165.
That string put Watonga up 36-18.
Jose Santoyo of Kingfi sher and Tristan Dobbins went down to the wire.
Dobbins led 2-1 after one period and, after a Santoyo reversal, got a late escape to lead 6-3 after two.
Santoyo got a takedown to pull within 7-5 in the third period, but Dobbins escaped and then tacked on a late takedown to win 10-5.
That put Watonga up 3915 before the Eagles got pins at 190 and 215.
Shellstrom finished the night with his pin.
