Gomez delivers as KHS earns first win
Bella Gomez picked up the win in Kingfisher’s first softball victory of the season.
The sophomore scattered four hits Thursday afternoon as KHS downed Enid JV 13-2 during the Highway 33 Classic.
The win came after KHS was knocked off 7-0 by Lindsay in the tournament opener. Lindsay is coming off a season in which it advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals.
The Leopardettes improved to 8-2 with their win over Kingfisher as sophomore Riese Flood pitched a gem.
Flood gave up just three hits and struck out eight batters in her five innings of work.
Kingfisher’s hits came off the bats of Liliana Garramone, Shelby Davis and Kynli Boeckman, but the Lady Jackets didn’t get a runner past first base until the final inning.
The bats were instantly livelier against Enid as Adlee Friesen led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored when Kinley Taylor reached on an error after hitting a fly ball to centerfield.
Taylor also scored on the play.
Friesen added to her day in the second when her triple to right-center field plated Mattie Slezickey, who had singled earlier.
Friesen was able to steal home before the end of the inning.
The freshman ended 2 for 2 with two runs scored and the RBI.
KHS had 12 hits overall. Taylor also scored twice while Jancee Matthews had 2 RBIs, which came from a two-run triple in the third inning.
On top of earning the win, Gomez also had a hit and scored a run.
KHS was 1-3 after the victory. Its other losses were to Weatherford and Bethany.
The Lady Jackets played Friday afternoon against Chisholm to wrap up pool play of their own tournament and then were set to play twice on Saturday.
