Football districts OK’d for 24-25 seasons
The OSSAA Board of Directors earlier this month approved the football districts for the 2024 and 2025 football seasons.
The approval is needed every other year as football works in two-year cycles for its classifications and districts.
Next football season is when a few new rules go into place, including splitting up Classes 2A, A and B into two classifications each (2A-I and 2A-II, A-I and A-II, B-I and BII).
The split breaks up what was the three largest classes.
Both classes within 2A and A will have 32 teams apiece.
The 32 largest based on enrollment numbers will be in the top class (2A-I for example) and the next 32 will fall into the next division.
That won’t affect Kingfisher, but it does the county’s other two schools.
Hennessey falls into 2AII the next two years and will be a part of District I.
Joining the Eagles will be Community Christian, Alva, Kellyville, Kiefer, Luther, Newkirk and Perry.
Community Christian, Kellyville, Kiefer and Luther are new to the district as Hennessey will drop Oklahoma Christian School, Millwood and Blackwell.
Cashion will be a part of Class A-I and falls into District 2 along with Christian Heritage, Dibble, Hobart, Meeker, Stratford, Walters and Wynnewood.
The Wildcats are currently a part of District A-3 and only Christian Heritage will remain the same during the next cycle.
Gone from district play will be Crescent, Watonga, Hinton and Minco. (Note: Cashon is currently part of a district that only has six teams as opposed to the normal eight.)
For Kingfisher, the Jackets are again a part of District 3A-1.
Also in the district will be Seminole, Anadarko, McLoud, North Rock Creek, Perkins-Tryon, Purcell and Woodward.
The newcomers are Seminole, Purcell and Woodward. (Note: Another rule change allows for the worst-performing schools in a classification to drop down the next cycle. Although Woodward will have a 4A ADM the next two years, its on-the-field performance will push it down to Class 3A. There were also changes made to Rule 14 regarding the classification of non-public schools.)
KHS will be losing Mannford, Metro Christian and Mount St. Mary from its current district slate.
Head coach Jeff Myers said he’s also cemented the non-district schedule for the next two seasons.
The Jackets will continue to play 4A’s Weatherford and Clinton and will also add Bridge Creek. They’ll be dropping Chisholm from the non-district slate.
Another change the next two years will see KHS not playing in Week 0, therefore it will not have an off week during the regular season.
