Eagles hold off late Luther push
Hennessey jumped out to a huge lead then hung on for dear life to cap its regular season with a win.
The Eagles held off a late charge from host Luther to win 42-40 on Friday.
They’ll enter this weekend’s playoffs with a 13-7 record.
Jael Torres scored 10 points in the first quarter as he helped HHS to a 13-2 lead.
It grew to 19-2 in the second before the Lions mounted their comeback.
A majority of the charge came in the second half.
The Eagles were up 22-9 at the half and still led 32-23 after three quarters.
As the gap narrowed, Layton Choate went 4 of 6 from the free throw line to help keep the Eagles on top.
“He hit some big free throws and handled the ball great down the stretch,” coach Brady Page said.
Torres finished the game with 19 points.
Choate and Timmie Perry scored six points apiece.
Hennessey travels to Lindsay on Friday to begin its playoff quest in a Class 3A district.
No. 6 Luther overpowers Lady Eagles
The Lady Eagles faced a tough task in their regular season finale.
It proved too tough to pull out a win as Class 3A’s sixth-ranked Lady Lions cruised to an 87-34 win at home.
Katie Kennedy scored six points in the first quarter as the Lady Eagles were within 11-10.
But Luther outscored Hennessey 60-17 over the next two quarters.
That included a 37-point output in the second quarter.
Six different Luther players reached double figures.
Sophomore Addison Harris led the way with 20.
Hennessey was paced by Kennedy’s 10 points.
Kassidy Amburn scored seven as the Lady Eagles finished the regular season 6-14.
