Dover teams finish 1-2 at Cimarron tournament
Dover’s boys took fourth in the Cimarron Classic over the weekend.
The Lady Longhorns? Good question.
After winning their first game of the season in Thursday’s quarterfinal, the Lady Longhorns dropped a 43-31 semifinal decision to Cimarron on Friday.
However, due to COVID-19 contact tracing issues with Cimarron and Ringwood, both Cherokee and Dover were left without Saturday opponents.
So the two teams agreed to play each other.
Cherokee emerged with a 51-43 victory.
Although Dover stayed close, Cherokee outscored the Lady Longhorns in each quarter.
Madi Moeller was held scoreless in the first half, but closed with 13 points in the second.
Karlee Harviston scored 15 points to lead the team.
Harviston scored all 10 of her points in the third quarter against Cimarron.
That quarter saw Dover turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a 27-24 lead entering the fourth.
However, Cimarron went on a 19-4 run to close the game.
Moeller scored nine points while Yareli Obeso scored six.
Dover boys 4th
The Dover boys, meanwhile, dropped their final two games, both by single digits.
Saturday’s setback in the third-place game came at the hands of Coyle, 50-43.
The Longhorns got off to a good start and led by six after a quarter, but Coyle’s 15-7 run in the second gave it the lead.
Dover kept pace in the third quarter, but couldn’t close its gap in the fourth.
Joriaun Caldwell led all scorers with 26 points while Kasen Harviston scored eight.
Kris Bayinton led Coyle with 25 points, including 15 in the second half.
Caldwell scored 19 before fouling out in the third quarter of Dover’s 49-40 defeat to Ringwood in Friday’s semifinal.
The game was tied 25-all at halftime and Caldwell had five points as the Longhorns were keeping pace in the third before he was sent to the bench for the rest of the game.
Dover had just one field goal in the fourth.
Damion Turner added seven points for the Longhorns while Harviston scored six.
Dover was 4-3 after the losses.
