Dover honors several heroes
Dover wanted to give out at least one more “thank you” to everyone involved in helping save the life of Randy Vitales.
That gesture was made Tuesday at Hamilton Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
Dover recognized and presented tokens of appreciation to everyone involved on that scary Jan. 9 morning when Vitales, a sophomore on the boys basketball team, collapsed during a tournament game at Mulhall-Orlando.
On Tuesday, Dover was once again facing Life Christian Academy, the same team it was squaring off against when Vitales collapsed.
Among those playing a huge role in saving Vitales’ life was Life Christian Academy senior Magnus Miller.
Dover recognized his efforts as well as those of Logan County first responders and coaches Danny Green, Pete Voth and Matt Peck.
Dover coach Jared Reese laid out everyone’s role in saving Vitales’ life when he addressed the crowd.
The admission to the game was donation only. All proceeds were directed to Vitales’ family to help with medical expenses.
As for the competitions on the court, there was little.
The Lady Longhorns cruised to a 59-10 victory.
Dover didn’t allow a field goal until the third quarter.
Every Lady Longhorn played and nine of them scored.
The team was led by Joi Caldwell’s 14 points.
Rylee Buck added 11 while Kynli Boeckman and Emerson Belt scored eight apiece.
The win was the Lady Longhorns’ fifth straight as they improved to 12-6.
The Dover boys turned on the jets starting in the second quarter in their 7031 victory.
They led just 11-10 before going on a 24-4 run.
Jonah Pendergraft scored 11 points during that burst.
The senior had 18 points by halftime and ended with a game-high 28.
He was one of 11 different Longhorns to score.
Dover also got nine points each from Casen Buck and Nathan Cohee as they upped their season record to 15-2.
