Dover Drought Over
Lady Longhorns win first tournament since 2008
Thirteen years and five days.
That’s how long it had been since the Dover girls basketball team had raised the championship trophy of a regular-season tournament.
The drought ended Saturday night when the Lady Longhorns defeated Cimarron 63-52 to win the Cimarron Winter Classic.
“I don’t know,” said Dover coach Brett Pitts when asked the last time Dover had won a tournament. “I just know it’s a long time.”
He was right.
The Lady Longhorns knocked off Christian Heritage on Dec. 6, 2008, to win their own tournament when some of the current players on the roster were still in diapers.
Cimarron was much improved since Dover opened the season with a 51-point win against the Lady Blazers.
The hosts scored 21 points in that game, but had 18 by the end of the first quarter in the tournament final.
But Dover was able to keep pace as Karlee McNulty poured in 11 first-quarter points.
Dover then outscored Cimarron 20-12 in the second quarter to build a cushion.
Katelyn Harviston scored seven in that second quarter and then six more in the fourth as the Lady Longhorns cushioned their lead to double digits.
McNulty ended the night with 20 points.
Katelyn Harviston scored 19 and Karlee Harviston 12.
Dover made its way to the finals with a 59-42 win over Ringwood in Friday’s semifinal round.
Another balanced attack saw Karlee Harviston lead the way with 16 points while Katelyn Harviston added 15 and McNulty 11.
Dover, 8-3, has won five straight.
Longhorns finish 7th
Dover’s boys settled for one win and seventh place in the tournament.
The Longhorns beat Mid-Moore Christian 67-50 in the seventh place game early Saturday.
Kolten Shaw and Emory Norton came up huge in the win.
Shaw was already having a big day - 15 points at halftime - before he added 10 more in the third quarter.
He finished with a gamehigh 28.
Norton helped the Longhorns get off to a fast start with three first-quarter 3-pointers.
He eventually scored 17.
Dover was dealt a 53-41 loss by Timberlake and a 53-29 defeat by Sharon-Mutual/Taloga in the tournament’s first two rounds.
The Longhorns are currently 3-8.
