District play kicks into high gear for KHS soccer teams
Kingfisher got a taste of district victory before Heritage Hall came to town.
The Lady Jackets shut down Newkirk 6-0 on April 6 to even their District 3A-2 record at 1-1.
Kylee Rojas and Mya Dewberry scored two goals apiece while the latter contributed three assists in the road win.
“I thought the best thing we did was pass the ball,” coach Aniessa Edsall said. “We found passing lanes, created opportunities for ourselves and capitalized when it mattered.”
Rojas got her first goal 23 minutes into the game. It took just four more minutes for KHS to get the next one as Ariana Rivera scored on Dewberry’s assist.
Rojas’ goal in the 41st minute began a streak of four goals in 21 minutes.
Dewberry assisted that goal as well as Peyton Walker’s score six minutes later.
The senior then was able to score her goals in the 58th and 62nd minutes.
Yamile Saucedo stopped all three shots that came her way.
“It was good to get a district win under our belt,” said Edsall. “We went in there with no pressure and just wanted to play like we knew we could.
“They trusted their training and it showed.”
Undefeated and defending state champion Heritage Hall visited Tuesday. It ended early as the Lady Chargers rolled to a 10-0 victory.
Heritage Hall has yet to surrender a goal this season and only gave up two all of last year.
“We knew going in that it would be a battle in the defensive third,” said Edsall. “But I thought our girls fought hard and gave us everything they had.”
After that loss, KHS was 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the district.
The Lady Jackets play two more district games than the KHS boys this year as Cushing and Newkirk only have girls’ teams.
Jackets open 3A-2 against solid Chargers squad The Kingfisher boys soccer team got its first dose of district action last Tuesday night.
It wasn’t easy to take. The Jackets were defeated 8-0 at home by Heritage Hall to begin their slate of five straight 3A-2 matchups.
Heritage Hall moved to 3-0 in the district with its win.
“We are in a really tough district to fight our way through,” said KHS coach Isaac Waltman. “We play several high caliber teams that are poised to make deep runs this postseason.”
On top of the Chargers, KHS has matchups against the likes of Community Christian and Mount St. Mary.
“It’s tough to find wins,” Waltman said.
“Getting this first game over with shows us the type of teams we will be playing in later district games and possibly in the playoffs.”
Despite surrendering eight goals, keeper Diego Muñoz and the rest of the defense was a bright spot for KHS.
Muñoz had 15 saves and the defense delivered nine blocked shots.
“The effort from our defense kept the game from getting worse,” Waltman said.
KHS has senior night Monday when it hosts Cordell. KHS travels to Alva Thursday and then Mount St. Mary on Friday.
“We have several tough matchups ahead of us and we hope to use this loss as a good learning experience,” Waltman said.
