Distance runners shine for KHS girls
The Kingfisher High School girls tallied 40 points to take seventh in the Class 4A state track and field meet last weekend in Catoosa.
Outside of Ally Stephenson (see related story), the team’s points came from the 3,200 meter relay quartet of Katon Lunsford, Chesni Newkirk, Taylor Mills and Jacee Mueggenborg.
The group shaved about 20 seconds off its best time to finish in 10:12.03, good for seventh place.
“These girls have supported and pushed each other all season,” KHS head track coach Kerri Lafferty said. “They knew they needed to shave time off in order to place. They definitely peaked at the right time.”
Lunsford and Mueggenborg were taking part in the final meet of their careers.
“We will truly miss them next year,” said Lafferty. “Both were incredible role models and team leaders.”
Liberty Starr didn’t earn points for KHS, but set a PR in the mile run.
Her goal was to beat 13:00. Her time of 12:52.10 placed her 12th.
“Like with the others, it was great to see her peak at the right time,” Lafferty said. “There is a ton of mental strength required of distance runners. Liberty handled the race so well, especially since she’s just a freshman. I can’t wait to see all that she can accomplish the next few years.”
