County players earn OGBCA All-State
Kingfisher’s Young, Okarche’s Mitchel also garner coaching awards
The annual Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State games are going to feature three players from Kingfisher County this year.
Kingfisher’s Rayland Garner and Allison Green as well as Lomega’s Hensley Eaton were announced last week as all-state selections.
Eaton will play for the Small West when it takes on all-state picks for the Small East.
The “small” schools consist of Classes B, A and 2A.
Garner and Green were selected to the Middle West team, which includes 3A and 4A schools.
The OGBCA All-State games will be played Saturday, June 4, at Mustang High School.
Eaton averaged 9.6 points, 6.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds for a potent Lomega attack during his senior campaign.
She helped guide the Lady Raiders to a 24-6 record and a Class B state runner-up finish.
Eaton was a part of state championship teams during both her sophomore and junior seasons and was the state tournament MVP in 2020.
Garner and Green helped lead Kingfisher to its first state tournament appearance since 2009.
The Lady Jackets also finished 24-6.
Garner led the team with 14.1 points and 6.6 rebounds.
She also collected 2.0 steals and shot 53.4 percent from the field.
Green chipped in 13.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals for the Lady Jackets.
She shot 43.0 percent overall, including 41.3 percent from 3-point range.
The 10-player Middle West squad consists of nine players from the Western Athletic Conference.
The conference, which includes Kingfisher, made up half of the Class 4A state tournament field this year.
Green, who committed to play basketball at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa late last week, was also among the players named to the OGBCA’s Academic All-State list.
Two county coaches were also honored by the OGBCA.
Kingfisher’s Taylor Young was announced as the Bertha Frank Teague Award winner.
This brand-new award was created to showcase the younger head coaches in the OGBCA.
One coach in the west and one coach in the east will be voted for the award each year.
To be eligible, a coach must have served five years or less as a head coach.
Okarche’s Haley Mitchel also hauled in some hardware.
The second-year head coach of the Lady Warriors was named the Central Region coach of the year for small schools.
Mitchel led OHS to the Class A state semifinals in 2022.
