No. 2 Hammon holds off No. 1 Lomega in potential prelude to the playoffs
The signature showdown of the 2025 Skordle Festival lived up to its billing.
Unfortunately for Lomega, it didn’t go the Lady Raiders’ way.
Second-ranked Hammon used a big third quarter to build a lead, then held off a furious late rally by No. 1 Lomega to earn a 53-51 victory at the Stride Bank Center in Enid on Saturday night.
It was the first showdown this season between Class B’s most highly- ranked teams…but maybe not the last.
No strangers in the state tournament, they’re the two favorites to meet up again on the first Saturday in March.
“It seems like we find a way to match up with them one way or another,” said Lomega coach Kevin Lewallen, whose team’s 14-game win streak was snapped with the loss.
The Lady Raiders led 24-21 at halftime and with 6-foot-4 post Henley West patrolling the paint, had to get there mostly from the outside.
Lomega made six firsthalf 3-pointers, three of them by Hadley Ott.
The production from beyond the arc didn’t slow down in the third quarter as Lomega added four more, two of them by Kate Myers.
However, Hammon’s overall production did pick up.
West and Ra-Kayah Davis-Pratt scored eight points apiece as Hammon outscored Lomega 23-12.
“They didn’t do anything different,” Lewallen said. “We just didn’t do as good a job against it. We let (Davis-Pratt) get to her left hand too much and it opened up a lot for them.”
Hammon’s three-point deficit was suddenly an eight-point lead.
It remained at seven points until less than two minutes to play…and Hammon had possession.
That’s when the momentum switched - and quickly.
Myers’ steal and layup pulled the Lady Raiders within five with 1:33 to play.
The Lady Raider press forced a turnover and that resulted in an Aliana Lawson 3-pointer.
The seven point defi-cit was down to just two points in a matter of seconds.
Still not done, Lomega’s Jenny Penaran grabbed a steal and passed ahead to Reagan Snowden, who tied the game with her layup with just over 1:00 to play.
Hammon finally was able to handle Lomega’s pressure and eventually West was fouled with 23 seconds left.
The senior made 1 of 2 free throws to give her team the one-point lead.
On the other end, West blocked Snowden’s shot out of bounds and then with 10 seconds left, Lomega turned it over.
Hammon was able to add another free throw, giving Lomega one last chance.
Snowden got a look at a 3-pointer, but had to shoot over West’s outstretched arms and it fell short.
“We had some chances,” Lewallen said. “This time they didn’t go our way.”
West scored 20 for Hammon while Davis-Pratt added 13. They combined for 19 in the second half.
Lawson led Lomega with her 15 points.
The Lady Raiders also got 12 apiece from Myers and Ott as they dropped to 19-2 on the season.
Hammon, which defeated defending 2A champ Merritt at home the night before, improved to 17-4.
No. 6 Hammon holds off Raiders by 7
Lomega kept up with sixth-ranked Hammon, but the Raiders couldn’t quite overcome them.
Hammon outlasted Lomega 48-41 late Saturday night in the final game of the 2025 Skordle Festival at downtown Enid’s Stride Bank Center.
The Warriors outscored Lomega in the first three quarters, but never by more than three points.
That allowed them to carry a seven-point lead into the fourth.
Once there, Tripp Higgins and Lane Johnston each made big 3-pointers to help the Warriors improve to 19-3.
Lomega went 8 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth to stay in it.
Johnston led the Warriors with 17 points while Kellyn Bullcoming added 10. Lance Yost scored 15 to pace Lomega.
Chase Burton added 12 while Jaxson Snowden
