Chisholm knocks off Lady Jackets for 3rd
A big fourth inning propelled Chisholm past Kingfisher on Saturday in the third-place game of the Highway 81 Classic Softball Tournament.
The Lady Longhorns scored four runs in the fourth, then held on in the fifth to pull out a 6-5 victory on their home field.
KHS ended with a 3-2 record at the tournament.
It began with a loss to Alva, which eventually won the title, and saw three victories sandwiched between the losses.
The first was 3-2 over Okarche on Thursday (see weekend edition).
The Lady Jackets came back Friday with a pair of shutout victories, blanking Mulhall-Orlando 13-0 and Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 7-0, to earn their spot in the third-place game.
Chisholm’s win avenged a 14-2 loss to KHS earlier this season.
This time around the Lady Longhorns quickly scored two runs in the top of the first inning and took that lead into the bottom of the third.
That’s when KHS busted through with four runs.
Shelby Davis put the Lady Jackets on the board with an RBI single to score Mattie Slezickey.
Kinley East doubled in two runs for a 3-2 KHS lead, then Jancee Matthews’ RBI groundout made it 4-2.
But Chisholm came right back.
It got two walks sandwiched around the team’s second out, then connected on five consecutive singles, four of which drove in a run.
East got an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Lady Jackets within a run, but the rally quickly ended.
East struck out seven batters and gave up four earned runs. She came on in relief of Bella Gomez early in the game.
The Lady Jackets had six hits, two of them from Adlee Friesen. Davis scored twice and East had 3 RBIs.
The Lady Jackets had twice as many RBIs (8) as hits (4) in the win over M-O.
Lady Panthers pitchers walked nine KHS batters.
Gracie Rowan had two of Kingfisher’s hits and scored twice.
East (1 inning) and Slezickey (2 innings) combined to hold M-O without a hit in the three-inning game.
East went all five innings in the victory over Pioneer. She struck out four and allowed two hits over five innings.
The Lady Jackets scored in every inning except the second.
Friesen and Davis had two hits and an RBI each. Both also scored twice.
KHS was 8-8 overall after the weekend.
The Lady Jackets played Weatherford at home Tuesday night (after press time) in a district game before beginning play Thursday in the Bethany Tournament.
