Champions Again
KHS topples the field for Highway 33 Classic title
Two tournaments.
Two championships. That’s what the Kingfi sher High School softball team can boast so far this season.
The Lady Jackets dominated the field over three days to claim that title in their own Highway 33 Classic.
The clincher was a 10-0 win over Piedmont JV in Saturday’s championship game.
Like KHS, Piedmont JV went 3-0 in its pool play games. (Note: Piedmont JV won the tournament two seasons ago. The Piedmont varsity team has won three Class 5A state championships in a row and four of the last five.)
However, neither the Wildcats bats nor pitchers were any match for KHS.
Kinlee East gave up just one hit - a bloop single - in the four-inning run-rule.
The sophomore righthander struck out six and walked one batter. She faced just 13 batters in the game.
The necessary run support was provided with one swing of the bat.
Freshman Kendall Farrar hammered the first offering made to her in the second inning over the left-center field wall.
The two-out homer scored Shelby Davis, who preceded Farrar’s hit by bouncing a ground-rule double over the left-field wall.
Kingfisher’s youth movement struck again in the third.
Freshmen Lily Voth and Addy Brueggen led off the inning with singles.
Voth scored on Reese Roof’s RBI groundout before another freshman Addison Johnson - scored Brueggen with her base hit to make it 4-0.
Kingfisher eventually loaded the bases with Liliana Garramone and the sophomore delivered a bases- clearing triple to push the score to 7-0.
Johnson’s RBI groundout in the fourth made it 8-0 as Addison Willson, running for Brueggen, scored on the play.
Roof scored when Farrar reached on an error and then Adlee Friesen ended the game with an RBI single to bring home Shelby Willson.
Friesen, Davis, Voth and Brueggen had two hits apiece.
Garramone had 3 RBIs while Johnson and Farrar had two apiece.
Kingfisher outscored foes 60-4 over the four wins in the tournament. More than half of those runs came in the opener, a 31-3 victory against Watonga on Thursday.
KHS came back Thursday night to beat Okarche 7-1, then downed Putnam City 12-0 on Friday to finish up pool play.
In each of the last three games, KHS got a home run from a different player.
Against Okarche, it was Kinlee East. Friesen followed Friday with a solo home run to lead off the second inning and then it was Farrar on Saturday.
In her only two at-bats Friday and her first trip to the plate Saturday, Farrar saw just three pitches. She delivered a double, triple and homer in those consecutive one-pitch at-bats.
Okarche bounced back from the loss to Kingfisher to win its final three games and claim third place.
The Lady Warriors beat Watonga 14-2 and Putnam City 4-2 on Friday to finish second behind Kingfisher in Pool B.
They knocked off Kremlin- Hillsdale 8-5 Saturday for third place.
