CCS defensive effort halts Hennessey run in 3A area
Hennessey’s hopes of a third straight trip to the state tournament came to a halt Thursday.
No. 6 Community Christian held the Eagles to a season-low point total during a 48-33 triumph in a Class 3A area consolation quarterfinal at Western Heights High School.
Hennessey, which reached the Class 2A state championship game last year, ends its season at 20-7.
“To go 20-7 and reach area isn’t bad after having to replace six of our top seven from last year,” coach Brady Page. “I’m proud of the guys.”
The Eagles never could get their offense on track and struggled to slow down Community Christian in the first half.
Down 31-20 at the half, Hennessey limited the Royals to 17 second-half points, but only managed 13.
The Royals were able to limit senior Angel Rodriguez to just three points in his final game.
Juan Dominguez led the Eagles with 17. He made five 3-pointers.
Chris Tovar added four treys for all 12 of his points.
The Eagles had just one made field goal inside the arc.
