Cashion runs over Hinton for playoff berth
As it turns out, Cashion has some postseason football to play this season.
The Wildcats put together their best performance of the season Friday to dismantle Hinton 33-7 on the Wildcats’ “senior night.”
The victory locked up a spot in the Class A playoffs.
The Wildcats enter their regular-season finale at rival Crescent with a 2-2 District A-3 mark. The Wildcats can finish as high as district runner-up with a win or can slide to fourth with a loss in Week 10.
Cashion had scored more than 19 points just once this season, but built a 27-0 lead by halftime.
They did it by - mostly running the ball.
Quarterback Ethan Waswo had three rushing TDs in the first half and four in the game.
Cashion ran the ball 47 times while attempting just eight passes.
“Hinton is a lot like us in that they don’t have a lot of size and they don’t have a lot of experience,” said Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford.
“So it was a game where I thought if we went in and played with some confidence and executed, then we would be in good shape.”
The Wildcats did just that.
Waswo carried the ball 25 times and racked up 145 yards.
He scored on runs of 1 and 11 in the first quarter and then had another 1-yard plunge in the second.
That was followed up by Cashion’s biggest play of the game.
Waswo found Drew Westerhoff for a 63-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to four scores by the break.
The sophomore quarterback added a 28-yard scoring run for a 33-0 lead in the third quarter.
On top of his big scoring reception, Westerhoff added 93 yards on nine carries.
Timmy Jones managed another 34 yards as Cashion totaled 352 on the ground and averaged 7.5 yards per carry.
Meanwhile the defense shut down Hinton.
The Comets got just 28 offensive snaps with 22 being run plays.
They picked up only 47 yards on those attempts.
Cashion didn’t allow a pass completion and picked off two of the six attempts.
All told, Cashion outgained its guests 441-47.
“We went old school with the play calling,” Shackelford said. “We ran the ball a ton and worked the play clock way down before the snap. And by moving the ball the way we did, it also helped keep their offense off the field.”
Jones led the defense with six tackles, including two for a loss. Matthew Stockton had three tackles for a loss.
The victory was Cashion’s second in the week. The Wildcats were defeated 51-13 at Woodward in a non-district game on Oct. 19.
However, the Boomers mistakenly played an ineligible player on some kickoff coverage teams. After self-reporting, the Boomers had to forfeit the game.
With that loss changed to a victory, Cashion is now officially 4-5.
