Cashion claims regional
Wildcats best A-B, field to return to state
Arapaho-Butler was able to defeat the Cashion boys golf team at their Class 2A golf regional qualifier.
The Wildcats didn’t let history repeat itself in the regional tournament.
Cashion claimed the boys regional title by 13 strokes Monday at Falconhead Golf Course in Burneyville.
The Wildcats shot a 36- hole total of 680 as they followed up an opening round of 339 with a 341.
Arapaho-Butler was the runner-up with a 693.
The Indians won the qualifier last week at Kingfisher Golf Course by six strokes during an 18-hole tournament.
However, Cashion took a big early lead as Max Brown an Camden Maroney carded opening rounds of 82.
Cashion also got an 86 out of Ashton Moore and an 89 from Holten Aaron.
That gave Cashion a 22-stroke advantage on Arapaho-Butler, which was in third place behind Velma-Alma’s 356.
The Indians closed strong with a 332 to beat Velma-Alma by 12 strokes, but couldn’t make up the difference on Cashion.
The second 18 saw Maroney bring in an 83 to give him a two-round total of 165.
Moore shot an 86, Brown and 86 and Aaron an 87.
The Wildcats’ Grayson Stewart fired rounds of 95 and 103.
Velma-Alma finished third with a 705 and Tipton fourth with a 727 while Turpin was fifth with a 747 and Mooreland’s 769 placed it sixth.
Those teams advance to next Monday and Tuesday’s state tournament at Buffalo Rock in Cushing.
The teams will play 36 holes the first day and 18 the second.
Cashion finished as the 2A state runner-up last season.
