Buckle: KHS rolls to opening wins
It had been more than two weeks since the Kingfisher girls basketball team took the court.
Edmond Santa Fe’s JV team took on the brunt of that frustration.
The Lady Jackets began defense of their Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational title Thursday with a 78-28 victory over the Lady Wolves at the APB.
It was Kingfisher’s first game since hosting Chickasha on Jan. 4 and the Lady Jackets made up for lost time.
They made six 3-pointers and scored 37 first-quarter points en route to improving to 10-2 on the season.
Three of those treys came from sophomore point guard Peyton Walker.
She scored 11 and Rayland Garner eight in the first quarter as KHS took a 32-point lead.
The advantage was 42 points at halftime.
In all, the Lady Jackets knocked down nine 3-pointers and had five players score in double figures.
Allison Green, who made a trio of treys, led all scorers with 19 points.
Walker finished with 13 and Garner 11.
Emily Myers and Addy Matthews scored 10 points apiece.
KHS played Guymon in Friday night’s semifinal (after press time).
Guymon defeated Guthrie 40-30.
Other first-round girls scores saw Yukon edge Harrah 42-40 and Oklahoma Christian Academy defeat Chisholm 57-22.
Kingfisher defeated OCA in last year’s title game.
Top-seeded Jackets make quick work of Wildcats
Kingfisher’s bid for six straight Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational titles began with a stroll through the park.
The Jackets ran over Ponca City JV 73-15 Thursday to open tournament play.
KHS led 25-3 after a quarter and 41-6 at half time. The Jackets then went on a 26-2 run in the third.
Mason Mecklenburg was the lone starter to not score in the first half, then the junior promptly knocked down three straight 3-pointers and scored all 12 of his points in the third.
He was one of four Jackets in double figures.
Xavier Ridenour led the way with 15.
Chase Davis poured in 11 and Caden Kitchens 10.
Kingfisher shot 56 percent overall and held the Wildcats to 15 percent shooting.
The Jackets improved to 12-0 and upped their overall win streak to 32 games.
They played Oklahoma Christian Academy in Friday’s semifinals (after press time).
The other semifinal featured Guthrie and Yukon.
Guthrie defeated Chisholm 82-57 while Yukon needed overtime to edge Harrah 56-53.
