Browning, Toepfer lead KHS at Hub City
Gant Browning and Rhylee Toepfer led Kingfisher to an eighth-place finish last weekend at the Hub City Classic wrestling tournament in Clinton.
Browning was the runner-up at 120 pounds and Toepfer at 126.
They helped KHS to 67 points.
Marlow was the tournament champ with 368. Clinton’s 178 made it a distant runner-up.
Browning pinned three straight foes to earn his spot in the championship.
However, Marlow’s Lawson Knox shut him out en route to an 8-0 major decision victory to claim gold.
Toepfer got to the finals via a bye, a pin and a narrow decision.
The pin came with just five seconds remaining in his quarterfinal match and then Toepfer edged Julian Pina of Clinton 6-4 in the semifinals.
Brayden Bowman of Marlow defeated him 6-0 in the championship.
Jose Santoyo earned fifth at 170 pounds after beating Douglass’ Jamariyon Franklin with a pin at 3:14 of their fifth-place match.
Bert Haag was sixth at 220 pounds and Braxton Shellstrom at 285.
They combined to earn KHS 23 points.
Lady Jackets have 4 placers
Kingfisher saw four placers help the team to a ninthplace finish in the girls standings.
Taygen Otey led the way by taking fourth at 114-120 pounds.
Otey defeated Hinton’s Destinee Brown 8-4 in their quarterfinal match before dropping a 5-2 decision to Jairy Vasquez in the semifinals.
She came back to pin teammate Emily Warren in
2:12 and then lost her thirdplace match to Hinton’s Layla Sweaney.
Warren ultimately finished sixth in the weight class.
Zoey Padilla took fifth at 126-132 pounds and Serenity Starr was sixth at 100-107.
Starr went 2-2 in the matches she wrestled and also received a bye in the first consolation round.
Kingfisher scored 23 points.
Hinton was the top-scoring girls team with 100 points, edging Cache by one point.
