Broken Bow ends Jackets’ season
Five different Kingfi sher players scored a field goal in the first quarter.
By the third and fourth quarters, that number dropped to two.
The decrease in production allowed Broken Bow to make a comeback and put an end to Kingfi sher’s season.
The Savages outscored KHS 24-13 in the second half Friday to earn a 4236 victory in a 4A regional consolation semifinal at Blanchard.
The loss caps the Yellowjacket season with a 7-19 mark.
It was Kingfisher that took command early.
The Jackets got the widespread production - including 3-pointers from Matthew Mecklenburg and Jake Reagan - to stake a 12-5 lead.
Along the way, Kingfi sher held Broken Bow freshman Greydon Howell - who scored 32 of his team’s 39 points in a twopoint loss to Tuttle the night before - without a point in the first quarter.
Howell started to warm up in the second quarter and notched 10 points, but the Jackets were still able to claim a 23-18 halftime lead.
Mecklenburg and Gilles knocked down treys in that second quarter and Reagan added a three-point play. But Kingfisher only managed five field goals the rest of the night while Howell started making a living at the free throw line.
He went 7 of 7 in the third quarter alone as the Savages outscored Kingfi sher 14-6.
Once they maintained that lead into the fourth quarter, the Savages were able to spread out Kingfisher’s defense and let Howell create.
The guard added eight more points in the fourth and finished with 27.
Mecklenburg led Kingfi sher with nine points.
Gilles added eight while Kasen Blair, Reagan and Jhett Birdwell scored six points apiece.
