Basketball tournaments pick up steam this week
The busiest month of the basketball season is here and it kicks into high gear this week. This is the first of two big tournaments statewide this month and all seven area high schools are taking part. A majority of them will be playing right here in Kingfisher as the APB will be the host site again of the Three Rivers Conference Tournament. Local teams taking part are Okarche, Cashion, Crescent and Hennessey. Cashion is the defending champion in both brackets as the Wildcats swept the title games last year in Enid. Cashion’s boys are the top seed this year as they enter the week undefeated. Hennessey’s boys, who fell to Cashion in the fi nals last year, are the No. 2 seed. The Okarche girls pulled down the No. 1 seed in that bracket while Watonga is No. 2. While area teams are playing in their gym, the Kingfisher squads will head north to the 51st annual Wheat Capital Tournament. This is the first time in a half-dozen years the KHS boys aren’t going in as defending champions. The Jackets fielded a JV team at the Wheat Capital last year as the varsity took part in the Tournament of Champions. However, in their return this season, the Jackets are the top seed. Perry, which finished runner-up to Holland Hall last year, is the second seed. The KHS girls drew the No. 2 seed in their bracket. Alva is the top seed. Dover is making the trip west to the Okeene Invitational, which has been revived. The DHS boys are seeded fourth and the girls seventh. Lomega, meanwhile, will head much further west as those teams return to the Warrior Classic in Hammon. The girls’ bracket has the potential for a top-fi ve showdown again as No. 2 Lomega is the top seed and No. 5 Boise City the second seed. Boise City defeated Lomega in the area fi nals on a buzzer-beater last season before both teams eventually reached the Class B semifi nals. The Lomega boys are the second seed in their bracket behind top-seeded Hammon. And not to be left out, Kingfisher’s freshman boys basketball team will see some action this week against varsity squads. That group of Jackets will play in the Ward Center Classic in Seiling. They are the fi fth seed in a bracket that sees Vici as the top seed. Following is a complete rundown of brackets that include area teams this week:
