Basketball tournament week has arrived
Conference crowns, repeat hopes all on line for local schools
The Kingfisher boys will be the overwhelming favorite to win the Wheat Capital Tournament when the 52nd annual event tips off Thursday in Chisholm.
The Wheat Capital is one of four tournaments that area teams will be taking part in this weekend, which is one of two major tournament weeks of the month.
The Jackets have won the Wheat Capital six out of the last seven years with the lone exception being 2019 when KHS sent its JV team to allow the varsity to play in the Tournament of Champions.
KHS won the five tournaments previous to that and also last season.
This year, the Jackets enter ranked No. lin Class 4A and are the only ranked team in the boys field.
Kingfisher’s girls are also the No. 1 seed and are one of five ranked teams in their bracket.
The Lady Jackets are currently seventh in 4A.
The bracket also includes Alva (No. 5 in 3A), Perry (No. 8 in 3A), Garber (No. 6 in A) and Woodward (No. 18 in 4A).
KHS lost to Alva in last year’s championship game.
The tournament featuring a majority of area schools is taking place in Fairview, the host site of this year’s Three Rivers Conference.
Cashion is the top seed in both brackets.
The Lady Wildcats were the runners-up last year to Okarche, snapping Cashion’s five-year win streak.
Cashion and Okarche are the only two ranked teams in this year’s field as the Lady Warriors are 10th in A and Cashion is 12th in 2A.
The Cashion boys have won two straight tournament titles and enter ranked fifth in 2A.
That’s one spot better than undefeated Hennessey, which has been the runner-up each of the last two seasons.
Thomas (17th in A) and Okarche (20th in A) are the other ranked teams in the boys’ bracket.
Lomega’s girls return to Hammon to defend their title at the Warrior Classic.
The host Lady Warriors, which beat Lomega in the 2018 and 2019 championship games, is the second seed and ranked sixth in Class B.
Also ranked are Binger-Oney (17th in A), Boise City (14th in B) and Erick (18th in B).
Lomega is also the top seed in the boys bracket. The Raiders are No. 4 in Class B and are the lone ranked team.
Dover is taking part in the Okeene Invitational, which is in the second year of its return after disbanding.
The Longhorns are the third seed of the boys bracket while the DHS girls are the sixth-seed.
While Kingfisher’s varsity boys are gunning for the Wheat Capital crown, the JV team will be competing for the second year in Seiling’s Ward Center Classic.
The Jackets drew the fifth seed and will play Texhoma in the first round.
They took fourth in the tournament last year.
