4 KHS wrestlers compete at state
Long, Browning make main brackets; Tuttle claims team title
Two Kingfisher High School wrestlers reached the main bracket of their respective weights, but the Jackets were unable to notch any points at last week’s Class 4A state tournament.
Gant Browning and Isaac Long won wrestle-in matches Friday morning at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City to earn the places in the state quarterfinals.
However, both were defeated in their two subsequent matches to be eliminated.
After taking fourth at the west regional, Browning went the wrestle-in match route and pinned at 3:28.
That sent him to the quarterfinals where he was defeated 11-6 by Barrett Hilton of Mannford.
A freshman, Browning then lost 14-9 to Harrah’s Liam Russell in the consolation bracket.
At 160 pounds, Long earned a 9-8 decision over Grove’s Wesley Downing to make his way into the quarterfinal round.
Once there, he was defeated by EJ. Beloncik by technical fall.
Weatherford’s Kale Visnieski picked up a 9-5 victory over Long in the consolation round.
Long, a junior, was the only KHS wrestler this year making his second at state.
Junior Rhylee Toepfer’s day ended after his wrestle-in match at 120.
He was pinned in the second period by Corban Zugelder of Catoosa.
At heavyweight, Braxton Shellstrom was pinned in the first period of his wrestle-in match with Skiatook’s Nate Easky.
Tuttle claimed its 13th straight state championship and 16th overall.
The Tigers notched 197.5 points.
Skiatook was the state runner-up with 137.
