‘Team effort’ helps Lady Jackets down Storm
Gerrett Spears got the kind of group effort he was hoping for in his team’s final regular season game.
The Kingfisher Lady Yellowjackets held off the Oklahoma City Storm 55-42 Monday night at the APB to cap the regular season on Senior Night.
“It was a great team effort,” said Spears, whose first regular season ended with a 14-8 record. “We had several players step up to ensure the win by playing their role offensively and defensively.”
The Lady Jackets had three players reach double figures in scoring, forced 16 turnovers and limited their own to just eight.
KHS took a 13-11 lead in the first thanks in part to a pair of seniors who were honored prior to the game.
Melody Wilfong knocked down two treys and Jenna Mueggenborg added a bucket to help their team take an early lead it never gave up.
Wilfong added another 3-pointer in the second quarter while Allison Green knocked down two.
Those, combined with eight points from sophomore Ray Garner, allowed the Lady Jackets to build up a 32-21 advantage.
Senior Jenni Beebe came alive in the third quarter as she scored eight of her 10 total points.
Kingfisher maintained its lead, but one player also suffered a scare when sophomore guard Ally Stephenson hit her head on the APB court after being fouled.
Stephenson didn’t return.
“We think she’ll be OK, but we won’t know until later,” Spears said. “With her out, it definitely changed the pace of the game for us.”
Kingfisher scored just six points in the fourth quarter, but also only surrendered four.
Garner eventually led the team with 16 points. She also had seven rebounds.
Wilfong scored 11 to go with four boards.
Beebe had nine rebounds and six assists - both team highs - to go with her point total.
The Storm got 12 points from Madeline Bills.
