Richard Leffingwell
Richard Leon Leffingwell, age 83, passed away July 12, 2024, in Kingfisher.
He was born June 5, 1941, in Ponca City to Vernon and Roberta Leffingwell.
Richard grew up alongside his siblings LaRue, Patty, Bill, Lynn and Verna Lea. He graduated from Lakin High School in Lakin, Kan., where he laid the foundation for a life filled with diverse experiences and deep connections.
On Sept. 25, 1965, Richard married the love of his life, Jo Sandman, in Lakin, Kan. Their journey together took them through various communities where Richard thrived in his career and cherished his family.
Richard and Jo were dedicated partners in every sense of the word and raised a family, served their communities and started several successful businesses together.
Richard had a successful career as a retail manager, overseeing operations in several stores including Big R, Farm Supply and a furniture/carpet store in Holyoke, Colo.
His tenure with Montgomery Ward later took him to Elkhart, Kan., where he eventually owned DJ’s Variety Store, which transitioned into DJ’s Floral.
After Jo’s passing in 2002, Richard embarked on a new venture, founding Dry River Transport, a trucking company where he continued to work diligently until his retirement in 2021.
Throughout his life, Richard called many places home, including Lakin, Kan.; Holyoke, Colo.; Elkhart, Kan.; and finally settling in Kingfisher.
Richard’s passions were varied and reflected his vibrant spirit. He enjoyed playing golf, having his loyal dog by his side, playing Mah Jongg on his phone, spending time with his family, singing at church and in the community and riding motorcycles.
He was an active member of the Patriot Guard motorcycle group, honoring fallen heroes at military funerals.
Richard is survived by his two loving sons, Trevor (Paula) of Kingfisher and Thad (Kim) of Stillwater; five grandchildren, Dawson, Jackson, Claire, Quinn and Josie; and his siblings LaRue Leffingwell and Lynn Carlisle.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jo, his parents and siblings Verna Lea, Patty and Bill.
Richard Leffingwell will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his entrepreneurial spirit and his compassionate service to his community – and he will also be remembered for visiting stores with his beloved dog Toby.
His legacy of love and resilience will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at a later date.
