A strong finish helped Piedmont knock off a strong field Wednesday to win the Kingfisher Invitational golf tournament.

The Wildcats finished with a flurry of birdies on No. 11, their last hole at Kingfisher Golf Course, to shoot a 278 in the Maxwell format tournament.

The format uses the top four scores for a team on each hole as opposed to the top four overall scores for a team on the day.

In winning, Piedmont beat out the top-ranked team in Class 5A as well as the top-three teams in Class 4A according to the latest poll on OSSAARankings. com.

Piedmont’s score bested Plainview by six strokes. The Indians won the Class 3A state championship last season and are currently ranked No. 1 in Class 4A.

Tuttle, ranked second in 4A, was third with a 285 while Heritage Hall, Class 5A’s top-ranked team, was fourth with a 286.

Community Christian, the 2023 Class 2A champion that is currently ranked second in 3A, was fifth and one stroke back of Heritage Hall.

Bethany came in sixth with a 294. The Bronchos are ranked fourth in 4A.

The host Yellowjackets were seventh in the 17-team field with their 294.

KHS was led by Cale Rea-gan’s 2-over-par 72, which tied him for fifth out of 88 golfers.

Reagan eventually finished sixth in a scorecard playoff.

Luciano Orozco fired a 77 for KHS while Paytun Burnham turned in a 79.

Myles Harrison shot an 81 and Ryan Sanders an 84.

Playing as an individual, Kingfisher’s Matthew Mecklenburg also shot an 84.

Three golfers were able to shoot under-par on the soggy course that attempted to soak in overnight and early-morning rains.

Plainview’s Jace Chaney took top honors with his 3-under 67, which was one stroke better than Heritage Hall’s Nate Seres.

Piedmont’s Braxton Marshall birdied his final three holes to shoot a 69 and take third.

Carter Fernando of Plainview was fourth with an even-par 70 while Bethany’s Jackson Payne shot a 72 and topped Reagan and Heritage Hall’s Roger Smith on the scorecard playoff.
